Computer for over-50s could inspire IT training

A new computer specifically designed for people lacking experience with computers or the internet could encourage over-50s to pursue computer courses.

Based on a linux open-source operating system, the new computer from simplicITy presents a series of basic options to users, with chat functions, email, web browsing and video tutorials available from a simple menu screen when the machine is switched on.

Also, in response to research from broadband regulator Ofcom suggesting that older people are looking for technology education, former Blue Peter presenter Valerie Singleton presents a series of tutorials that are accessible through the same menu.

Nigel Houghton, managing director of simplicITy, said: "A very large proportion of [inexperienced web users] are in broadband-accessible areas and we are trying to address the market where these people are looking for something simple."

Ofcom research suggests people who remain offline tend to be older and either find the internet prohibitively expensive or have chosen to stay disconnected.
