Companies 'will hike spending on desktop virtualisation'

19:14 7th July 2010

Businesses are expected to increase their spending on desktop virtualisation and collaboration applications this year, according to Michael Dean, head of marketing at the National Computing Centre (NCC).

Mr Dean said that "collaboration applications such as Microsoft's SharePoint are becoming very popular" with businesses, with the functionality of SharePoint 2010 likely to "attract new customers".

He went on to say that enterprise adoption of desktop virtualisation is also on the up, as "it offers reduced running costs, whilst [and the] outsourcing of day to day operations".

His comments emerged as information technology research and advisory company Gartner predicted IT spending around the globe is forecast to total $3.350 trillion (£2.206 trillion) in 2010, an increase of 3.9 per cent from 2009 spending of $3.225 trillion (£2.123 trillion).

Mr Dean identified security as an area where spending would remain high, due to "ever present" new threats.

Desktop virtualisation is a topic that could be taught in IT training.
