Businesses haven't yet managed to handle email properly, according to Doug Miles, UK managing director of the Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM) Europe.
Mr Miles said that recording emails was not so difficult for companies, but that even businesses with a full enterprise content management solution (ECM) are "not very confident" they are doing so successfully.
He said managers should be looking to implement an information management strategy, a topic taught in IT courses, because "without one your business is going to miss out big time".
Mr Miles was speaking lat the London leg of the AIIM Roadshow 2010, an ECM event, which also took place in Glasgow, Bolton and Birmingham.
His comments followed a report by Radicati Group study published last week which revealed the installed base of hosted email mailboxes in Europe, the Middle East and Africa is expected to grow by around 20 per cent to 641 million between 2010 and 2014.
