Businesses should deal with the security threats that social media is posing in the workplace, according to Robert Stroud, the international vice president of ISACA (formerly known as the Information Systems Audit and Control Association).
"Although social media provides a new entry point for technology risks such as malware and viruses, these risks are lowered when employees have an increased understanding of the impacts of their risky behaviour," Mr Stroud said.
He said companies should implement awareness campaigns among employees to handle their social media strategy.
His views emerged as a report by ISACA revealed that social media poses a number of major threats to companies; from viruses and malware to brand hijacking and a lack of control over content.
A recent survey by ISACA also revealed that 62 per cent of those who took part regard the risk posed by employees visiting social networking sites as being of medium or high importance.
