Companies 'should become acquainted with SaaS and the cloud'

Businesses should understand software-as-a-service (SaaS) and cloud computing, whose use can be taught in IT training, in an effort to adopt new technology, according to Doug Miles of the Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM) Europe.

"Some of these decisions about what you're going to use will not be made for technical reasons, it will be mandated," said the UK managing director of the international information management community.

The expert added that SaaS is more tangible than cloud computing, because it sits on a server and is sold by a provider, whereas that isn't always the reality with the cloud.

He was addressing an audience at the London leg of the AIIM Roadshow 2010.

More than half of the respondents to a survey by Iron Mountain say they are using SaaS for mission-critical applications. This is seen as a sign that businesses are gradually becoming more comfortable with SaaS and cloud computing.
