Businesses in the UK should pay attention to the risks posed by malware as employees increase the use of social media in the workplace, according to Rik Ferguson, solutions architect at Trend Micro, a malware software security company.
"It has become more acceptable and more accepted to use social media at work," Mr Ferguson said as he warned of the increase risk this poses for office networks, a subject that could be taught in IT training.
He said that because of the increase in use of social media, new virus and malware threats are rising in the workplace. Mr Ferguson said that there are social network campaigns designed to spread malware. Businesses, he said, should be effectively screening web traffic as it comes into their organisation for malicious content.
Nearly a quarter of employees now visit social media sites from their organisations' network, according to research by Trend Micro published last week.
