Companies are not properly handling the use of social media in the workplace, according to Doug Miles, UK managing director at AIIM (Association for Information and Image Management) Europe.
"Things like Twitter and blogs and that kind of thing, instant messages, are all horrendously unmanaged," he said.
Mr Miles went on to say that most business people are scared of social media, but he recalled how email was also scary when it started.
However, he said, businesses do not regard social media applications like Facebook as a source of potential problems in the workplace.
Speaking at the London leg of the AIIM Roadshow 2010?, Mr Miles urged business leaders to address social media's role in the corporate environment, saying: "It is going to change business - it already is changing business."
