Cloud computing has become a mainstream service for businesses of all sizes, according to David Bradshaw, European SaaS (Software as a Service) and cloud services research manager at International Data Corporation (IDC).
"The cloud is an enormous market that's going to carry on growing. It's already used more widely than people often realise, because there're some things that people do that they don't think of as being cloud," he explained.
According to Mr Bradshaw, the heaviest users of cloud technology are the big companies, with more than half of enterprises with 50 or more staff "using cloud services somewhere, for something".
His comments came as new research by IDC said [indicated] that the enterprise cloud server hardware market will reach $12.6 billion (£8.4 billion) by 2014.
Separately, recent analysis by ABI Research said that revenue related to consumer use of cloud-based backup and storage sites will increase from almost $75 million (£50 million) in 2009 to over $372 million (£249 million) in 2015.
