Data protection will become "a major issue" this year due to a "push towards cloud computing," according to international managed security services company Network Box.
Simon Heron, internet security analyst at the group, said that data security tops the list of priorities for cloud computing, because the service sees a number of businesses giving their "precious" information to a third-party.
Mr Heron went on to say that to guarantee information security companies must be very careful to implement a process in which they identify who can access the data but also make sure that the information is encrypted.
His comments came as a new study by Infosecurity Europe revealed that a third of companies have not installed a system to adequately handle a security breach.
In other news, the US government has called for more action in order for Americans to be protected from cyber attacks.
Speaking at the world's biggest security conference in San Francisco, homeland security secretary Janet Napolitano said the government was working with a "sense of urgency" and that the department of homeland security "stands at a very important juncture."
