Cloud computing 'has transformed the IT industry'

10:14 28th January 2011

The development of cloud computing and its expected mass adoption in 2011 has made lasting changes in the IT industry, according to Rob Lovell, CEO at ThinkGrid.

Mr Lovell said this year enterprises are expected to adopt cloud computing services as they seek to reduce costs and opt for less rigid systems.

"Companies are asking themselves why they should continue with the status quo, making upfront capital expenditure investments and carrying all the risks associated with large scale IT implementations," he said.

"They want more choice and flexibility around IT and cloud delivers on this," he added.

The expert went on to say that the adoption of the cloud model has allowed users to change the way they access and pay for IT services.

Separately, cloud computing has become the top priority of chief information officers, a study published by Gartner earlier this month shows.

If companies across Europe's five largest economies continue to adopt cloud technology as expected, 177.3 billion (£148.7 billion) will be generated annually by 2015, research by the Centre for Economics and Business Research showed.
