Climate conference 'offered little on how IT industry can help'

14:25 14th December 2009

The IT industry's potential for cutting the world's carbon emissions has been overlooked during the climate change conference in Copenhagen, it has been suggested.

Industry analyst firm Gartner has claimed that the countries taking part in the talks have yet to recognise the potential for people in IT careers to use technology to reduce the impact of carbon emissions.

While the talks have focussed on ways to reduce emissions, little new has been said about what the IT industry could do to help, said Simon Mingay, research vice president at Gartner.

"It comes across that the industry isn't really moving this forward itself. It would be good to see some new content, new messages," he said.

The climate change conference in Copenhagen has been described by experts and politicians as a potential last opportunity for the world to take the action necessary to cut carbon emissions and help slow the process of climate change.
