Chipmaker Intel has revealed its latest product, a chip with 48 separate processing cores all contained on a piece of silicon the size of a postage stamp.
The Single-chip Cloud Computer could help revolutionise the IT industry because each core is in theory capable of running a separate operating system, significantly expanding the amount of data that can be stored on one chip.
It has been called a 'cloud' chip because it is capable of undertaking a variety of computer resources that are usually performed by several racks in a data centre.
At present, most chips manufactured for use in desktop computers contain just four separate cores, meaning this new chip offers a major leap forward in the IT industry's technology.
"Over time, I expect these advanced concepts to find their way into mainstream devices," said Intel's chief technology officer and head of Intel Labs, Justin Rattner.
Intel is a world leader in the development of silicon innovations and has become a driving force in the progress of the IT industry over recent decades, with its products integral to desktops and other computing devices.
