A number of schools in China are reportedly removing the controversial web-filtering software installed on their computers earlier this year.
Chinese authorities had backed down on a plan to install the Green Dam filter on all new PCs after a national outcry about state censorship.
However, schools were still ordered by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to continue using the software, which officials said would block pornography and other content it deemed to be unsuitable.
Critics of the filters suggested it would also spy on web users and block politically sensitive sites.
Beijing's Number 50 High School posted a notice on its website this month saying: "In order to ensure a smooth operation of the school's daily education and teaching tasks, we will gradually remove the 'Green Dam' software soon for all the computers with internet access."
Technicians at other schools around the country said the software caused problems with other programmes and restricted computer training.
