Cheap option for file transfers launched

US academics have launched the BioTorrents project, a pioneering file-sharing technology aiming to reduce bandwidth costs and boost their cooperative abilities.

The new service is hailed as an effective way to distribute files, including large ones, to a vast number of servers.

Ernesto Van Der Sar, the founder and editor-in-chief of TorrentFreak.com, said that groups might opt for the cheap technology "because all the downloaders share the distribution costs. It also allows files to be spread much faster when the demand for a large file is high".

He added, however, that it should only be used in exceptional circumstances, since the majority of academic institutions have large bandwidth available while the demand for files is not very high.

"BitTorrent is only useful if the institutions have a lack of bandwidth or if the demand for a large file - several gigabytes - is very high," Mr Van Der Sar added.
