New research has suggested that businesses are being compromised by their own staff on a more frequent basis.
An investigative piece by Network World said companies are being hacked through social engineering exploits - a type of compromise that combines the digital virus with a real world element, such as an unhappy employee within the organisation or a spy.
According to David Emm, a senior security researcher at Kaspersky Labs, with this form of hacking "you get an approach that looks like it's from a legitimate contact and then you look at the item and you've got malware on your system".
It is also understood that social networking websites can be used to spread viruses as well, through instant messaging programmes.
Mr Emm noted that users are more likely to respond to approaches coming from someone they know or trust, compared to speculative requests from unknown sources.
"What we're seeing here is a social networking version of the standard
phishing method," he added.
