The balance between male and female workers in the IT sector must be addressed, according to Teresa Schofield, regional leader of the Global Marathon Europe, a worldwide forum that brings women together to have conversations about a career in IT and other industries.
"Discrimination is an issue no matter what claims are made about diversity," Ms Schofield said. "The gender balance has to improve if we don't want every technically qualified innovator or captain of industry to be male."
The expert went on to say: "It will take time but something can be done to change" employers attitudes when hiring someone in IT or engineering.
She went on to say that those women interested in a career in IT "will find the enthusiasm of women around the globe to impact every sphere of our lives inspiring".
She said that those who start working in the IT industry soon realise how varied and fun their jobs can be and how many opportunities are opened to them as a result.
