The Communications Consumer Panel has urged the government to start deploying high speed broadband to areas that will not be covered by private sector services "as soon as possible".
"It is imperative that the government begins roll-out of publicly-subsidised NGA [Next-Generation Access] as soon as possible to complement market-led initiatives," a spokesperson said.
The group described the government's proposed 50p tax on landlines as a "pragmatic way forward" that will back the roll-out of high speed broadband, but added that it is concerned about the impact that it will have on customers with low incomes.
The news follows the announcement by i3 Group that Britain faces the danger of being left with a mediocre broadband network if 24 Mbps is set as the benchmark speed.
The fibre optic infrastructure specialist said that 24Mbps will soon be an outdated speed with the arrival of applications like IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) and HD (High-Definition) video on demand.
