The Communication Managers Association (CMA) has called for the creation of a new communications act to encourage supply competition and commit itself to bringing universal access to affordable and fast broadband before 2017.
Carolyn Kimber, the CMA chairman, described the political parties' plans for high-speed broadband as "a vivid illustration of the poverty of thought and action that is serving UK businesses so badly".
She added that the investment of "£150m-200m a year on rolling out broadband to unserved areas is not going to create the flourishing online economy that is the economic future of the UK."
In other news, BT has won a £237 million contract extension by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) that will see the telecoms giant provide voice, data network and contact centre IT systems.
The three-year deal is an extension of an existing agreement between the two parties, which resulted in the transformation of the DWP's voice and data networks following the installation of an internet protocol and telephony system.
