CIOs recession proofing IT spending

12:56 5th August 2008

Chief information officers are adapting their IT strategy and investment to react to a recession, according to a leading technology website.

The silicon.com CIO jury, made up of CIO and IT director's from 13 companies, revealed that the prospect of the UK heading into full blown recession is forcing some of them to reassess their business models.

The technology website asked whether their organisations' IT strategies were prepared to go on a full-blown recession footing, Six members of the panel saying they had already recognised this risk, while six decided not to alter their IT spending plans.

Mike Roberts, The London Clinic's IT director, said: "We will be able to reduce expenditure and go into 'maintenance mode', by reducing contractors and expenditure on non-essential maintenance."

A recession is a contraction phase of the business cycle, where gross domestic product growth is negative for two or more consecutive quarters.
