Half of organisations will freeze their IT budgets next year, according to a new Datamonitor report.
The research Technology Trends: Analysing Global Enterprise IT budgets 2008, is based on a survey of over 8,000 IT decision-makers at organisations worldwide.
It revealed that the majority of enterprises globally are planning to cut back on IT spending increases, except the healthcare sector which is planning to increase its IT spend in 2009.
Daniel Okubo, analyst at Datamonitor, explained that this downward trend is not solely due to the current economic conditions.
He said: "Suppliers should be wary in assuming that the recent downturn in IT budgets is a short-lived phenomenon.
"For the past couple of years enterprises have been cutting back IT budget increases as they adopt a more cautious viewpoint of the global economy."
Earlier this month, the trade association for the UK's technology sector highlighted the pivotal role that IT will undertake in delivering the 2012 London Olympic Games.
