Companies in the UK need to pay more attention to the data they store electronically, according to a technology expert.
There does need to be some extra stick involved to make companies focus more carefully on information they store on people," said Simon Heron, internet security analyst at international managed security services company Network Box.
His comments emerged as the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) said it will soon be able to fine organisations up to £500,000 for serious breaches of the Data Protection Act.
Mr Heron went on to say that the ICOs new powers as "a necessary step".
In other news, monitoring internet service providers (ISPs) to implement tougher regulations and legal action for filesharing and media piracy online is "tremendously difficult", said Mark Jackson, editor of ISPreview.
Mr Jackson went on to say that for an ISP with several million customers it becomes a really complex task to monitor what everybody is doing or transferring at any one time.
