Businesses 'increasingly demanding open source software'

The IT industry could see a change over the coming months as more businesses look to switch to open source technology, an expert has claimed.

According to digital market research firm eDigitalResearch, those in IT careers could be in demand if they are able to work with and develop open source software because businesses are increasingly looking to adopt the technology.

Shane Wright, IT director for eDigitalResearch, explained that there is also a belief that open source technology is more secure.

He commented: "Using open source is the only way a technical department can verify that software is correct, complete and does not contain undocumented back doors or poor quality code."

A recent report from industry analyst firm Gartner has forecast that the use of open source business intelligence software in organisations will have grown by 500 per cent by 2012.
