Businesses 'at risk if they ignore signing up for a new .co domain name'

Companies in the UK face risks if they do not register for a new .co domain name, warned Phil Turnbull, product manager for Hostway.

Mr Turnbull said businesses need to consider registering ahead of the introduction of the new .co domain name but should also analyse the creative opportunities registering a new domain site, a topic examined in IT training, presents them.

Mr Turnbull said that businesses exposed themselves to risk if they did not register: "This could be detrimental in terms of damaging the brand's integrity but also it could be much worse and they could have defamatory statements up there. Somebody could set up a parallel business and try and take business away from the original company."

He said using a .co domain provides businesses with a stronger association with commerce and people recognise it around the world.

The expert went on to say that business leaders need to explore the advantages of this change. He said they should consider whether they want to build a sub brand or perhaps implement a micro site or sell something else online.
