Business sponsors critical to intelligence projects

The success of business intelligence projects depends on sponsor risks, according to analyst firm Gartner.

Mark Beyer, who is research director at the firm, said that chief operation officers and IT directors should make sure they find a business sponsor to support business intelligence.

Speaking at the Gartner Business Intelligence Summit in London, Mr Beyer said that the business sponsor should be allowed to make decisions that could go against the corporate IT standards.

According to Beyer, in order to ensure the sponsors are committed to projects, their job, reputation and finances should be at risk if the intelligence project is not successful.

In other news, businesses are losing billions of pounds because of failures in managing their telecoms services contracts, according to Hudson & Yorke.

"So much effort goes into signing the contract and when it is done there is a tendency to sit back and expect everything to happen, when it actually requires strong hands-on management," said Harry McDermott, who is chief executive at the firm.
