Business abandon traditional IT

Business is abandoning traditional IT in favour of emerging software-as-a-service and cloud computer models due to economic pressures, an IT services firm has claimed.

Wipro Technologies has suggested that many organisations see these models as a way to reduce cost of ownership for applications and IT infrastructure.

Cloud computing allows users to access technology-enabled services from the internet without control over the technology that supports them, while software-as-a-service is a programme model where an application is hosted as a server and is provided to customers online.

Srini Pallia, head of business technology services at Wipro, said: "Buying, installing, customising and maintaining applications is expensive. It is also a distraction.

"Businesses want to spend time on core business rather than back office IT operations."

In September, it was announced that a trio of global companies are funding a new system of satellites that could bring the internet to communities in Africa, Asia and South America.
