The European Commission has given Orange and T-Mobile the green light to merge their UK networks.
It is now expected that the tie-up of France Telecom-owned Orange and T-Mobile's brand in the UK, which was first proposed in September 2009, will be completed during the spring.
The joint venture, which is expected to post pro forma 2009 sales of £7.57 billion and EBITDA of £1.38 billion, will be the largest in the UK by some margin.
It will be led by representatives of both companies, with Deutsche Telekom chief financial officer Tim Höttges and France Telecom's Gervais Pellissier holding the post of non-executive chairman on a rotating basis.
In other news, mobile data traffic by 2015 will be more than 50 times higher than at the end of 2009, according to a market expert.
Speaking at the Mobile World Congress, Hans Vestberg, chief executive of mobile phone maker Ericsson, also forecast that the number of smartphone devices would grow by four times and the traffic they generate would increase by more than 25 times.
