Broadband minister will face 'tough task' on super-fast broadband

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has announced that Ed Vaizey is the UK's new minister responsible for telecoms and broadband.

Commenting on the news, Chris Marling, editor of independent broadband comparison service Broadband Genie, said that the new minister will have a tough task on next-generation internet access due to the UK's current economic climate.

"We can only hope that the new government recognises a strong broadband infrastructure will be priceless to our creative industries, which are now the lifeblood of our nation", he noted.

According to Mr Marling, the previous government's landline tax intended to finance super-fast broadband roll-out was a move targeting the wrong people. He added that the new coalition government "must spend to make our broadband competitive".

Earlier in May, a resolution adopted by the European Parliament said that half of all European Union households should be connected to very high-speed broadband networks by 2015 and 100 per cent by 2020.
