Broadband internet has enabled the consumption of rich media, according to Ernesto Van Der Sar, founder and editor-in-chief of TorrentFreak.com
"Initially it took up to an hour to download a low quality music song, but today people can download a high-definition motion picture in the same time," Mr Van Der Sar said.
He explained that over the years, users of filesharing services have altered their habits based on what their connection allows them to do.
Looking into the future, Mr Van Der Sar said that further increases in broadband speed and distribution will make possible "streaming video, and this trend will continue as the difference between TV and the internet will slowly disappear".
His comments came as UK broadband celebrated its first decade on March 31st.
In just ten years, broadband subscriptions in the UK have increased exponentially, growing from less than 200,000 in 2002 to 13 million four years later and currently at 20 million.
