One of the UK's major mobile phone networks has said that Britons have embraced mobile broadband and that the number of fixed-line connections could fall further.
Tim Lord, regulatory director at Hutchison 3G (UK), said that there are has been a strong response to mobile connections and he cited Ofcom figures showing that over ten per cent of web users now use the technology.
Mr Lord added that convergent communications could make it even more widespread.
Talking at the Joint Westminster eForum & Westminster Media Forum keynote seminar: Digital Britain, Mr Lord said: "Mobile broadband has been an enormous success in the UK and about 15 per cent of customers are actually thinking about giving up their fixed line and moving to a mobile service."
Computer training could also help people to learn more about mobile technology and how it could benefit their lives.
The new interim report, 'Digital Britain', produced by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, includes plans to improve the manner in which public services can be delivered digitally.
