British Library uses new software to archive UK websites

12:15 26th February 2010

The British Library is using new software from IBM called BigSheets to preserve terabytes of information from websites that otherise would be lost to future generations.

The web archiving technology is preserving information on significant events such as the credit crunch and the 2010 General Election for future study and research.

Over the past ten years, public information has been stored on the internet but the danger is that this information will be lost once the websites are closed.

"At some point in the future, people are going to want to look at patterns shown through these websites. The software allows you to find all the relationships of the data," said David Boloker, CTO for emerging internet technology at IBM.

In other news, the government is "building an information security community, but it is still in early days", according to a top government infosecurity officer.

His comments emerge following a series of reviews into huge data losses suffered by HMRC, the Ministry of Defence and a Home Office supplier in 2007 and 2008, according to a news report.
