A British IT expert has been hired by the US government to join a team of scientists attempting to create a robot soldier.
Colin Allen is a historian and philosopher of cognitive science at Indiana University and is also the author of the book Moral Machines: Teaching Robots Right From Wrong.
He has been commissioned to impart his knowledge in order to prevent a robotic soldier from becoming a Terminator-style assassin.
It is hoped his input will create a soldier that has morals and is able to take ethical decisions and will never commit war crimes.
Mr Allen commented: "The question they want answered is whether we can build automated weapons that would conform to the laws of war. Can we use ethical theory to help design these machines?"
The Terminator brought actor-cum-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger to prominence when the first film in the trilogy was released in the 1980s.
In it he plays a cyborg killing machine sent back in time to exterminate the human race.
