The British Computer Society (BCS) has appointed health informatics expert Dr Glyn Hayes and branch member Roy Newell as honorary fellows.
Their titles are recognition of the two individuals' significant contribution to BCS and particularly their efforts to use information technology to make advancements in research used to assist the disabled.
Dr Hayes employed IT systems in his profession as a GP and was one of the first doctors to use a computer to maintain patient records and organise patient consultations in the late 1970s.
David Clarke, BCS chief executive, commented: "Glyn and Roy have led the debate in their respective interest areas over the many decades they have been involved with the BCS."
He added that their contribution has led to BCS becoming the leading expert on technological innovation in fields such as geo-spatial technology and Cybernetics.
Cybernetics is the study of control theory and social and physical systems that have distinct goals as well as those that operate according to circular systems.
