Britain is 'very advanced in terms of digital communications'

British consumers enjoy one of the planet's most advanced digital communications, according to the telecoms regulator Ofcom.

In a recent study, Ofcom also said British people send more text messages and watch more TV than many other countries, several news reports said.

According to the Ofcom report, Britain is the country with 88 per cent of households with digital TV on their main set, the highest proportion of any country.

"Innovation means that the UK is well placed in the take up and availability of digital services," Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards was quoted as saying.

When it comes to broadband, however, the research revealed the country's broadband speeds are not as fast as those of other countries.

Only 10 per cent of British households could connect at over 8 megabits a second (Mbps), compared with 37 per cent in the Netherlands, Ofcom said. France and Sweden have much faster speeds than those in the UK, the report also said.
