Writing blogs, a subject that could be taught in IT courses, is a tool that can also be used by companies as a way of search engine marketing, according to Nick Baggott, founder of digital marketing consultancy Navigate Consulting.
"Blog content tends to get more comments and be linked to by other sites because it's more interesting and less sales focused. This makes it more search friendly," Mr Baggott said.
The expert went on to say that blogs are useful to companies because other people not linked to the business will link to their content. He also said that their benefit lies in the creation of opinions because they then generate more links and can become "link bait" for other websites. It is in this way, he said, that they work very well in search engines.
Mr Baggott said that although small companies have reduced marketing budgets, businesses can often find ways to position their blog higher up in search engine rankings than their site.
