Small companies could benefit from dedicating more time to their blogs as the online resources can be good for business, says a digital marketing expert.
According to internet best-practice professionals Econsultancy, blogging is not a short-term tool to help generate web traffic.
"It's a long-term game that will reward you massively if you get it right," says editor-in-chief Chris Lake.
If firms can understand what Google wants then they can employ suitably-trained staff to update their blog and hopefully then see their web pages rise up the search engine rankings.
But to do this Mr Lake notes you will need to first understand what keywords and phrases to use.
Keeping pace with the new opportunities offered by the internet is a difficult task, although by enrolling on computer courses employees can become more proficient in their current roles.
Well-trained computer literate staff are also adding to the number of employees that work from home - the IT Forum Foundation's Work Wise UK initiative hopes more than half the workforce will work at home within five years.
