Bad software updates causing IT failures

Businesses could benefit from staff software and computer training to help them avoid critical IT failures.

According to a new survey by GFI Software, half of businesses have suffered at least one major failure as a result of installing a bad software patch.

A quarter of those surveyed have experienced recurring problems and lost productivity because of a software bug.

Bad patch-related failures were found to be most common in the legal and healthcare sectors.

Over half of respondents said their organisation did not have rigid policies in place regarding the installation of software updates.

Christian Florian, product manager at GFI Software, said: "The stark figures revealed by this research reinforce the importance of testing patches before deploying them in a production environment."

He also recommended applying software patches in a "timely fashion" to avoid compromising security.

The survey showed that small businesses are the fastest to deploy patches, with 45 per cent doing so within 24 hours of release.
