BT's decision to expand to its high-speed broadband coverage, from 40 per cent to 66 per cent of the country by 2012, will place pressure on Virgin and could help with pricing, according to Edd Dawson, the managing director of broadband.co.uk
"I don't see it [superfast broadband] becoming really, really cheap over time, but it will put some pressure on Virgin. As fibre becomes more present there will be more competition on price," he explained.
BT was originally planning to cover 40 per cent of Britain with high-speed broadband - between 15 and 40 megabits per second - by 2013, but thanks to better-than-expected work the group now expects to be able to roll out its superfast service by mid-2012.
According to Mr Dawson, the move is significant but will fail to address the digital divides between rural and urban regions as it will mainly focus on highly urban areas.
