BT has won a £237 million contract extension by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) that will see the telecoms giant provide voice, data network and contact centre IT systems.
The three-year deal is an extension of an existing agreement between the two parties, which resulted in the transformation of the DWP's voice and data networks following the installation of an internet protocol and telephony system.
BT says the system handles two million calls a day.
As part of the extended contract, BT will offer converged IP local and wide area networks, IP telephony and a series of conferencing services, including video-conferencing.
In other news, BT is launching a new service that will enable companies to access 40 Mbps fibre optic broadband for £45 per month.
Nigel Stagg, managing director at BT Business, said the telecoms group has found that one in four companies are already using faster broadband to drive more processes over the internet while another 28 per cent are using it to increase their website capabilities.
