BT announces broadband upgrade

12:44 31st March 2010

BT has unveiled plans to upgrade just over 300 exchanges between autumn 2010 and summer 2011 in a bid to extend super fast broadband to an additional four million houses, a news report has said.

Computer Weekly reported that the telecoms giant will make the technology available on an open wholesale basis to all businesses that offer broadband services.

"Four million premises will have been connected by the end of 2010 in the largest single commercial investment in fibre-based broadband ever undertaken in the UK", a spokesperson for BT was quoted as saying by the publication.

According to Computer Weekly, the move is the latest chapter in BT's £1.5 billion drive to make high speed fibre-based broadband available to street cabinets that offer services to at least 40 per cent of Britain, about 10 million houses, by the summer of 2012.

In other news, BT boss Ian Livingston has joined the chorus of voices calling for changes to the Digital Economy Bill, saying that iIllegal file-sharers should be penalised instead of having their accounts cut off.
