Businesses are not making the most of the opportunities technology affords them, says the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC).
Technological advances could greatly benefit small businesses struggling to survive in the current financial crisis but there is little uptake of innovative business technology.
John Dunsmure, managing director of the BCC, explained that by investing in IT solutions many SMEs could allow their employees to work flexibly or remotely.
"Technology can be used to become smarter, to be more customer orientated in what we do and in the current economic climate, we are going to have to work harder and smarter and technology can make a huge difference there," he said.
He added that upgrades in IT systems and the utilisation of cutting-edge technology to make working methods more efficient were just some of the initiatives that companies were missing out on.
A study commissioned by Dell in August 2008 found that 44 per cent of respondents consulted the internet when seeking business advice.
