Authorities must move fast to provide the UK with the next-generation internet access, an essential tool for IT training.
That's according to Andrew Ferguson, editor at independent broadband news website thinkbroadband.com. Mr Ferguson said: "At present the UK is in a position where it can play catch-up and remain within the major league with regards to a digital economy."
But he warned that unless government and corporations move fast the economy could be negatively affected.
He said consumers not only risk having to wait a few more minutes for information to download, but they also face new content services not appearing in the UK in the near future.
Mr Ferguson went on to say that many rural areas in the country need help improving their broadband and that densely populated urban residential areas are also affected by the digital divide.
Separately, Jeremy Hunt, the secretary of state for culture, Olympics, media and sport, confirmed plans for three market testing projects to bring super-fast broadband to rural areas.
