Electronic viruses targeting applications will increase this year, a study has reportedly said.
Of 136 IP network operators surveyed, 35 per cent believe attacks will focus on applications instead of operating systems in 2010, network security supplier Arbor Networks was quoted as saying by Computer Weekly.
The study also revealed that these type of attacks require less bandwidth compared to large-scale attacks, which only 26 per cent of network operators say will be the biggest threat this year, the report added.
"Today, the majority of global business networks are entirely reliant on internet availability, stability and integrity," said Jennifer Pigg, vice-president for enabling technologies at analyst firm Yankee Group.
In other news, the French government has warned internet users in the country over growing security concerns regarding the use of Internet Explorer.
The warnings follow concern expressed by the German Federal Office for Information and Security.
"There is no threat to the general user," a spokesman for Microsoft, Internet Explorer's maker, was quoted as saying by Computer Weekly.
