Asterisk, the open source voice over internet protocol (VoIP) service, is offering users more assistance than other forms of telephone solutions do, according to David Duffett, principal consultant at Asterisk training and consultancy company Telespeak.
Speaking at the enterprise business communications event UC Expo, Mr Duffett claimed: "Asterisk probably has better support than virtually anything else out there".
He went on to say that it is "a myth" that the service has no official support because it's open source software, noting that communications technology company Digium, the creators of Asterisk, supplies it on a paid-for basis, which incorporates official support.
The VoIP service also offers unofficial support to its users via a large network "of tens of thousands of people" who are "out there developing, testing, documenting and refining Asterisk", Mr Duffet added.
His comments came after Panasonic announced that its line of SIP (session initiation protocol) cordless phone systems have been certified by Digium for use with Asterisk.
