Apple has sued phone maker HTC accusing it of infringing 20 patents that are used in the iPhone.
In its legal filing, Apple said the patent infringements covered technology used in the device's interface as well as its "underlying hardware and architecture."
"We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours," said Apple boss Steve Jobs in a statement.
HTC, which makes phones for many companies including Google and was behind the Nexus One handset, responded by saying it had only just learned about the filing and has not had the chance to investigate the legal action.
In other news, a total of 24 phone operators have joined forces to challenge the dominance of mobile app stores, like the one operated by Apple.
The Wholesale Applications Community, which was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and includes Vodafone, China Mobile and Sprint, has access to more than three billion customers.
