New figures have shown that Android, Google's smartphone operating system, has now overtaken its Apple counterpart, which runs on models used on the iPhone.
The report by research firm NPD Group found that Android is now in the second place of the US smartphone market, with a 28 per cent share, compared to 36 per cent for Research In Motion (makers of the BlackBerry) and 21 per cent for Apple.
Commenting on the findings, Flora Graham, the mobile phone editor of CNET UK, said they helped to illustrate that Android "is definitely a valid competitor to the iPhone".
She noted that the growth is because people "can get Android's OS on any number of handsets, but really Apple is more than happy to make one phone at a time".
In addition, recent figures from GFK show that Android handsets are increasing their share in the UK market, rising from 3 per cent sales in the 12th week of 2010 to 12.3 per cent by the 15th week.
