Technology investment will increase in 2010 but IT is still going to have to prove its business value as it tries to emerge from the economic downturn, Steve Ranger, editor of silicon.com, has said.
Mr Ranger predicted that "2010 is still going to be a testing year for IT", explaining that "tech projects will need to have a fast and proven return on investment if they are going to be signed off".
His comments came as a new study found that the majority of small and medium businesses (SMBs) will increase their technology spending in 2010 despite concerns about the business climate.
The report, published by Microsoft, said that overall SMB IT spending is expected to rise by an average of 16 per cent this year over 2009 levels.
According to Mr Ranger, the technology industry's recovery will not be as fast as some expected. He noted that commercial IT budgets are "unlikely to rise too much" and public sector budgets will be under pressure "whoever wins" the forthcoming election.
