Online scammers are expected to enjoy a "bumper year" in 2010, the CPP Group has warned, marking the start of the Scams Awareness Month.
Sarah Blaney, fraud expert at the CPP Group, said that Scams Awareness Month should "remind people that card and identity fraudsters are always developing new and sophisticated ways to get their hands on personal information."
Her comments came as new figures have revealed that 77 per cent of internet users have been targeted by e-mails designed to steal personal information.
The CPP Group study also found that 70 per cent receive fake pleas for money while 67 per cent have been told they have won a competition only to find it was a fraud scam.
In other news, governments and multinational companies should step up their defences to prevent potential threats such as the recent Chinese attack on Google, according to the chief executive of McAfee.
"The Google attack was the most sophisticated we have ever seen with the most complex attack vectors targeting networks with commercial impact," David DeWalt was quoted as saying.
