Web design should focus on traffic

Web design should focus on increasing web-site traffic rather than being designed for purely aesthetic purposes.

According to an expert at Kentwood online marketing, businesses are still making fundamental mistakes about the purpose of a website - despite increased awareness of the importance of search engine optimisation.

This can often mean that large amounts of money can be spent on a good-looking site that attracts few visitors.

Laura Bergells, web consultant at Kentwood marketing, told Grand Rapids Press that she believes that design is too often a goal in itself and that designers should consider the need to reach the desired audience.

She said: "Businesses need to resist the temptation to start with design.

"It's about spreading your message and letting people interact with it."

However last month, Erik Averink of SDL Tridion advised firms to bear in mind that first impressions are important when it comes to corporate websites.
