Concerns have been raised that English universities could lose their reputation as leaders in the world because of a lack of public investment over the coming years.
The government is expected to cut spending on universities in the future as it seeks to tackle the mounting public debt, but Sir Alan Langlands, chief executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England, has suggested that could result in a drop in the quality of education being provided.
Such a fall could have significant repercussions in the IT industry, where there is expected to be a large demand for highly-skilled professionals over the coming years.
Investing in IT training will be necessary if the UK is to keep up with the demand for new talent, as recent figures have suggested the global economy's recovery will be based on a successful IT sector.
