Training opportunities could help reduce poverty in London

A £23 million fund recently announced for training programmes in London could help reduce poverty levels in the city, reports the BBC.

According to a City Parochial Foundation report compiling information from various government sources, the majority of low-income families in London now live in the outer boroughs of the city.

The report found that around half a million adults live in poverty throughout London - the highest proportion anywhere in England.

A spokeswoman for Boris Johnson, mayor of London, said: "Work is often the best route out of poverty and the mayor recently announced £23 million of funding that will help up to 10,000 Londoners into employment or training."

Providing better access to computer training and other skills courses could help low-income families to find jobs that offer higher salaries.

Free computer training courses are to be provided in Northern Ireland as the government recently identified abilities in information and communication technologies as one of the crucial skills sets in the modern economy.
